Tooth Extraction

If you need a tooth pulled, Waldorf dentist Dr. Tim Modic can help.No one wants to have a tooth pulled but there are times it needs to be done. No matter the cause, the situation is usually either an emergency and unplanned for or as part of a total treatment plan and expected.

The first thing that we do in either situation at Academy Dental Care near Waldorf, Maryland is to make sure that the treatment required is indeed a tooth extraction and that there is no alternative. If there are alternatives, we discuss these with the patient so all their questions are answered.

The next question is should this tooth extraction been done immediately or should it be delayed. We know that it doesn’t seem like teeth extraction should ever be delayed—especially if there is pain involved—but if there is infection present that needs to be treated with antibiotics, teeth extraction should be delayed. If the tooth extraction should be handled by a specialist or if the patient wishes to be sedated for the procedure it could also be delayed.

Once the decision to extract the tooth has been made then the patient would like to know what can they expect during and after this procedure. We have available to us the most advanced techniques for making the area numb with local anesthesia. We also have the ability to reduce the patients anxiety and awareness of the procedure with the use of Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas), oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation or a combination of these techniques.

Following the procedure, we continue to support our patients through the post tooth extraction period. We always spend time explaining what the patient should do to make the post extraction as comfortable as possible. We also provide the patient with appropriate medication for comfort and protection against the threat of continued infection.
